Letter to the editor in the Ventura County Star, California
Nearly a hundred years ago a group of businessmen in Detroit decided to form an organization to raise funds that would support scholarships, aid families in need, and contribute to the community. They chose the name "Kiwanis" from a Chippewa Indian word meaning, "we build."
They continued to build their small group of men into an international organization committed to the children of the world. In 1987, they made a very smart move. They allowed women to become members!
Membership in Kiwanis can begin in elementary school as a member of a K-Kids club; in middle school there are Builders clubs; in high school the Key clubs; and in college, there is Circle K. Upon graduation from high school, all Key Club members automatically become members of Kiwanis.
Kiwanis of Simi Valley has served this community since 1965. We support local charities, and contribute our time and energy to projects that benefit the community. We also assist our students by providing tools to contribute to their success.
The Hope of America award is one that recognizes and encourages graduating elementary and middle school students who possess outstanding leadership ability, ethical and moral character, achievement in academic studies, and show promise of future success and service to the community.
