Members of Pullman Kiwanis clean up park, hope to make it more attractive to children, families

Picking weeds and planting flowers is just the start of what Pullman’s Kiwanis club has planned for Kiwanis Park.

“It’s got our name on it, so we want to make it look good,” club Vice President Dennis McConnell said during a scheduled cleanup of the park just north of Neill Public Library on Saturday morning.

The goal is to eventually build a path from the library to the park so children and parents can walk from the library and enjoy the park, McConnell said. Kiwanis Club member Dorothy Wiley said there is city electricity and water available, but the park only has one streetlight in use. The club hopes to eventually to add more lights and take advantage of a sprinkler system to water some of the native and wildflowers.

“It’s one of the many goals of the Kiwanis club to make Pullman a better place to live,” she said. The Kiwanis club is (part of) a 600,000 member international program that focuses on the welfare of children with the belief that they are most important to a community. In Pullman, the club raises money through pancake feeds and monitoring parking for Washington State University football and basketball home games. The money is spent on projects like the one at Kiwanis Park.
