It’s a little bit food/music festival and a whole lot of car show at the Kiwanis Club of Chino's sixth annual Corn Feed Run.
And in case you’re wondering, there's no corn involved.
The successful event began in 2002 when the Chino Kiwanis club was looking for a fundraiser. Self-professed “car nut” Walt Pocock offered to look into the possibility of a car show. Once the group decided to forge ahead with the idea, it contacted Gene Skiles, affectionately known locally as “Nairod,” who ran popular corn feed runs of his own in the 1980s.
The group asked his permission to borrow the name. Skiles agreed and has been an unofficial host each year.
“What this is and has become is the best car show around,” Pocock said with a chuckle. “We have the help and support of the city of Chino, which allows us to use City Hall property and surrounding streets. The very first program was a big success and that success grows each year. We had 200 cars/vehicles for the first one, and we had 427 last year. We expect more this year.”
The event welcomes cars, motorcycles, working tow trucks, hot rods, and show vehicles. All cars must have been built before 1972.
“This has turned out to be a true community event,” he said. “People come out. Families come out. Thanks to the city, we have a great venue. This year, parts of Central Avenue will be closed off and we’ll
have some cruising. There’s music. There’s food. There are raffles. And we award awesome cut-glass trophies.”
It’s the family atmosphere that seems to attract and keep the crowds.
And then there are those cars.
