Third graders get free dictionaries

KOTA-AM, Rapid City, South Dakota

Thanks to one non-profit organization, Rapid City third graders will have no problem spelling.

Friday morning, the Rapid City Kiwanis Club handed out over a thousand dictionaries to third graders at the city's 15 elementary schools.

Teachers say after sharing classroom dictionaries, this is the perfect gift.

3rd grade teacher Colleen Marvin at Valley View Elementary School says having their own dictionary in their desk will make it a lot easier for the children to write stories and look up words so that they are spelling them correctly.

Kiwanis purchased the dictionaries through fundraiser money.

The teachers and the students were so appreciative when we delivered the dictionaries. Perhaps their students will someday become active Kiwanians (with excellent vocabularies).

This was a combined service project between two Kiwanis clubs in our city, and copies of "The Best Dictionary for Students" were purchased through www.dictionaryproject.org.

This has become an annual event which the third grade teachers and school administrators now look forward to.

Uptown Riverside Kiwanis(California) has also had this program in place for a number of years.  It is relatively inexpensive ($1/student) and has a major impact.  For many of our students, this is the first book they have "owned"
