West Frankfort, Ill.—It’s not often that a local service club is able to lure its respective organization’s top dog to West Frankfort to address the town’s youth. However, the West Frankfort Kiwanis club was able to do just that. Of course, the fact that the organization’s international president happens to be an FCHS graduate probably didn’t harm its chances.
Don Canaday, a 1952 graduate of Frankfort Community High School, was the featured speaker at an FCHS assembly October 7 at Paschedag Auditorium.
Canaday graduated from the University of Maryland before joining the Armed Services, where he served for 21 years and retired as a Brigadier General.
Canaday received many awards while serving his country: Two Legion of Service awards, two Meritorious Service awards, the Air Medal, Joint Services Commendation medal, Air Force Commendation medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and Senior Parachute badge.
After the highly decorated Brigadier General retired from active military duty, he served in the Indiana National Guard, as the executive director of the Indiana State Bar Association, executive director of the Indiana Legal Education Forum, and director of Planned Giving for Kiwanis International Foundation. He currently serves as senior vice president of Moorhead Associates, an Indianapolis-based consulting firm. He’s also a member of Laurel International, LLC.
Canaday has served as president of the Indiana District of Kiwanis and is presently serving as President of Kiwanis International, which involves traveling throughout the world.
Other guests at the assembly included L. Goebel Patton, FCHS principal in 1954 and Ernie Yuhas, who served as Key Club sponsor the same year.
