The Kiwanis Club of Massapequa will celebrate its 60th anniversary on June 8, with milestones such as the 25th Silver Anniversary of the Massapequa Kiwanis Golf Classic on June 1 at Eisenhower Park Red Course, and the 15th anniversary of the Baldinger NFL/Kiwanis Football Clinic on Saturday, July 18 at John Burns Park.
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time; like many volunteer community service groups, new Kiwanis Clubs are sponsored or "chartered" by other established area clubs. In 1949, the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset was the sponsoring club for Massapequa.
The area was very different back then: The charter night dinner dance was held Sept. 24, 1949 in the Wagon Wheel Restaurant where the St. Rose of Lima Church now stands. About 226 Kiwanians from Long Island and New York watched as Daniel C. Wall, past mayor of Massapequa Park, was sworn in as president and accepted the club's charter from Si Reynolds, governor of the New York District of Kiwanis International.
The new club banner was presented by Manhasset Kiwanian James Dowsey and accepted by Herman Maass. The Invocation was given by the late John Malcolm Haight from the Grace Episcopal Church. George Dippel, a prominent architect who later became the designer of the Massapequa schools, was the event chairman.
The Annual Golf Classic started on the 9-hole Peninsula Golf Course in Massapequa, eventually becoming the club's largest fundraiser. This year's 25th Silver Anniversary event, chaired by local dentist Dr. Rich Cassaro, will be played at the Famous Eisenhower Park Red Course on Monday, June 1, with dinner at Sal's Place on Hicksville Road.
The day will include a great day of fun and golf. The cost is only $150 per golfer, with many opportunities for sponsorship and raffle prize donation. The 15th Annual Baldinger's NFL/Kiwanis Football Clinic, to be held on Saturday, July 18, from 9a.m. to 1p.m. at John Burns Park on Merrick Road in Massapequa, has benefited nearly 2,000 youths 8 to 14 years of age with a day of fun and football, with emphasis on the fundamentals.
The clinic is hosted by Gary Baldinger, longtime Massapequan, Kiwanian and former NFL player, who, with Brian and Rich Baldinger, were the only trio of brothers to play in the NFL from 1986 through 1993. Monies raised are used by the Massapequa Kiwanis Foundation (501C3) for many projects and programs in the community, such as supporting Key Clubs in three area high schools, Massapequa, Plainedge and Seaford, as well as hands on construction projects like wheelchair ramps at area homes or the famous Kiwanis Fishing Bridge.
