Garden City, NY, July 10, 2009—The Kiwanis Club of Garden City is launching a membership drive to strengthen its base, and to encourage community and service-minded citizens to consider joining the organization, which works on community service projects, especially those that benefit children.
The Kiwanis Club of Garden City, a part of Kiwanis International has been working in Garden City since 1951 and includes members from various walks and sectors of life.
"There is a growing interest, particularly among Baby Boomers, to give something back to children and to projects that improve the world and the communities where they live," said Arthur Anderson, president of the club.
"We want to attract more men and women to our work-community and child-directed service-and we know that their membership will help us make a difference that can last a lifetime," Anderson added.
In addition to the service the club provides, other membership benefits include, professional networking, international awareness, friendship, entertainment, education and diversity in membership.
Around the world, more than 250,000 adult Kiwanis members and 300,000 youth Service Leadership Program members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged and care for the sick. The Kiwanis Club of Garden City and the NY District Kiwanis includes more than 8,100 members from throughout New York State.
The club has undertaken several projects, including sending children to Kamp Kiwanis each summer, supporting local Boy and Girl Scout Troops, cooking hamburgers for the Games for the Physically Challenged each year, working closely with the Chamber of Commerce to support local merchants and businesses, collecting food donations each week for a local mental health clinic, working with local charities to Adopt-A-Family at the holidays and providing a College Scholarship to a graduating senior from Garden City.
