SUMMERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA - Members of the Summerland Kiwanis Club will sponsor a
puppy under the B.C. Guide Dog Services' Puppy Sponsorship Program.
The club members
are looking to raise at least $1,250 for the sponsorship, and for that amount
of money, they will also be able to name the dog.
Dogs under
the program can end up in one of three career streams. Some are trained to
become guide dogs for blind or visually impaired people, others are autism
support dogs for children between the ages of four and 10 and a few will go
into the breeding program.
Between the
ages of 20 and 24 months, dogs in the first two streams are matched with a
client.
The dog
program was presented on Saturday during the Kiwanis Zone Conference, held in
Summerland.
The
conference brought clubs from Summerland, Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos as well
as Washington clubs from Tonasket, Omak, Okanogan, Brewster and Winthrop.
The theme of
this year's governor, Patrick Ewing, is We Love To Serve, and this theme deals
with dogs.
