BEAVER DAM, WISCONSIN - While Louisville had its Kentucky Derby on Saturday, Beaver Dam had a race
of its own, sans mint juleps, of course. Fifteen hundred yellow, rubber ducks
were off and floating their way down the Beaver Dam River as a
fund-raiser for the Tanzania Education Project started by former Beaver Dam
High School student Cassie Parkhurst. The Beaver Dam Noon Kiwanis Club
organized the duck race to raise funds to help cover the cost of sending the
donated school supplies to the African nation. Kathy Hoch, of Columbus, held
the ticket that corresponded to duck No. 1216, which crossed the
finish line first, winning her $1,000. The ducks were released from the
downtown Center Street bridge with the finish line just past the Davis Street
bridge.
