HANNIBAL, MISSOURI - Mainstream society has heard enough about autism to know that it’s an epidemic which causes nearly every part of life to be altered in some way; both for the child and for the families involved. Yet most people don’t realize just how much autism can affect the everyday pleasures of life – such as the experience of going to the movies. Children with autism have a host of sensory disturbances; meaning noises that are louder can be excruciating coming into their ears. Stark differences in lighting can create a sensory nightmare the child may not even be able to describe to someone else. For this reason, many kids with autism or other sensory disorders are unable to go to the theatre.
Because the Hannibal Evening Kiwanis is dedicated to the causes of children, they have listened and want to do something to help. Through the cooperation of B&B Theatre of Hannibal, a special event will be hosted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at B&B Theatre, 100 Main Street in Hannibal. The movie shown will be Toy Story 3.
“Sensory-Friendly Movie Day” is a special showing, where adjustments and accommodations will be made for sensory issues. Lighting will not be completely dark, but dim lights will remain on. Sound volume will also be adjusted and not be as loud as what is normally on at a movie. Due to the fact that many kids with autism are on special diets, the rule of no food being carried in will be waived for this showing. The concession stand will remain open for anyone who wants to use it.
The ticket for the child with sensory issues will be paid for by the Hannibal Evening Kiwanis. Anyone who attends with the child will pay full price for admission. The Hannibal Evening Kiwanis welcomes all area children with sensory problems to come and enjoy this special showing of Toy Story 3.
