MASHPEE, MASSACHUSETTS — Call them industrious, but don't call them names.
The Mashpee KKids, an offshoot of the town's Kiwanis Club branch, were honored Friday for their role in creating a "No Name-Calling Day" law across the state.
The rule, enacted in 2009, designates the fourth Wednesday in January as No-Name Calling Day and encourages Massachusetts children to "become aware of the harm bullying can do," states a press release from state Rep. Matt Patrick's office.
The KKids "testified at several hearings, wrote support letters and participated in the bill signing with Governor Patrick," according to the Falmouth Democrat's office.
Patrick and state Sen. Robert O'Leary, D-Barnstable, presented the KKids with a framed copy of the legislation during a ceremony at Mashpee Middle School.
The club is based out of Quashnet Elementary School.
