Be a volun‘tourist,’ meet Kiwanians in Guatemala

Kiwanians are invited to travel with Ambassadors for Children (AFC) this coming October to Guatemala for a special Kiwanis cultural exchange and voluntour trip. The trip is scheduled for October 6-13, and like other AFC voluntourism trips, the Guatemala excursion combines travel with service.

But this trip adds a new twist: Guatemalan Kiwanians will meet the AFC travelers during a welcome dinner and may serve and tour along as their schedules permit. Participants will experience first-hand the warmth of Guatemala’s people—especially its Kiwanians—as well as the Central American nation’s diverse landscape and rich culture.

Volunteers on the trip will:

  • Explore the ancient colonial city of Antigua.
  • Work with the Open Windows Foundation in San Miguel Dueñas, promoting literacy at the library and computer center.
  • Spend a day in the rural Esquintla province, painting and doing light construction at schools and health clinics.
  • Take a boat tour on Lake Atitlan.
  • Hike through the Pascal Abaj ceremonial site (optional).
  • Enjoy a free day for sightseeing.

“We are encouraging all Kiwanis members to join us on this trip to promote camaraderie among clubs, make connections with Kiwanians in Guatemala, and to take part in international service that makes a lasting impact on the communities we are serving,” says AFC vice-president Kelly Campbell. “The goal is to connect the two countries through their Kiwanis clubs so that clubs in the United States will continue to promote service work in the area. We want to foster an amazing cultural exchange.”
