Award speaks volumes about Kiwanis reading program

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) will honor Kiwanis International during its third annual Gift of Reading Awards Gala in September. Also being recognized are the Washington Post and Verizon.

“This year’s RIF Gift of Reading Award winners have made significant contributions to fostering a culture of literacy and educational achievement in the United States,” says Carol H. Rasco, RIF president and CEO. “We are grateful for their support and look forward to presenting them their awards at the Gala.”

Kiwanis International is being cited for its annual Read Around the World program, support of local RIF programs in the US, and Kiwanis-club projects that address child literacy in fun and creative ways.  Launched in 2001, Read Around the World is Kiwanis’ most popular annual service program. This past year, almost 2,000 Kiwanis-family clubs conducted Read Around the World projects. Reading Is Fundamental motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Many Kiwanis clubs have supported RIF programs since the organization was founded in 1966.
