Leaders from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and the South Pacific convened in Oahu, Hawaii, earlier this month. But unlike most global gatherings, this world summit brought together nearly 200 teenagers for a multicultural camp experience dubbed “World Camp 2007.”

The Kiwanis family was well represented at the event, with 12 Key Leader graduates in attendance.
“The YMCA’s core values are in line with Key Leader values,” says Key Leader program specialist Erin Fischer. “This is a great way for us to have a program that extends the Key Leader reach. We’re hoping to use this as a tool to see if this is logical as the next big step.”
Campers learned Key Leader values while taking part in other camp-related activities, such as maneuvering a challenge course, swimming, kayaking, and performing service.
Hawaiian newspapers—the Honolulu Advertiser and Mixed Plate Special—filed online stories and videos about World Camp, including coverage of a unique bond formed between two girls, one an Israeli Jew and the other a Palestinian Muslim.
