Ready, camera, Aktion! Troupe’s debut honors the forgotten

The Aktion Club of Mankato, Minnesota, made the news recently when its Aktion Club Theatre staged its first play during a special event at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. The performance was part of a ceremony to honor the placement of hundreds of new grave markers in the treatment center’s cemetery. Thousands of patients with disabilities who died at state treatment centers have been buried in graves marked only by a number. Now they are being identified and remembered with dignity.

Aktion Club Theatre of Mankato is a community-theatre group whose actors are self-advocates (people with developmental disabilities). The members collaborate in the development of plays and performances and hope to raise awareness of the issues faced by people living with disabilities. Visit the Mankato Free Press online to read the story and view photos.

The Mankato Kiwanis club sponsors the Aktion Club.
