Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs’ winter meeting: What’s the buzz?

Last month, more than 200 Kiwanis Service Leadership program district administrators, chairmen and coordinators met in Denver, Colorado, with Kiwanis International staff from Circle K, Key Club, Key Leader, Builders Club, Kiwanis Kids and Aktion Club to share news and ideas. Keynote speaker Dan Roam, author of The Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures put everyone in a creative spirit. The goal of the gathering? To make sure the buzz and ideas energize Service Leadership clubs around the world. Here are a few of the hot topics:

Social media:  Are you using it to communicate with your clubs?  Here are some links to social media resources:

Growth:  Did you catch all the new growth materials at www.kiwanis.org/charter? Plus: Support your SLPs with the valuable tools at www.kiwanisone.org/advisor.

What is the code of conduct in regards to alcohol being served  and consumed during a meeting? The meetings I have been attending are allowing alcohol to be consumed and some members have already been drinking before the meeting even starts which makes it difficult to carry on business properly. I have just recently joined Kiwanas and have never been involved with any club or committee that allows this.  Can you let me know what the policy is for Kiwanas members.

Thank you

Here is the policy relating to alcoholic beverages and Kiwanis functions as stated in the International Policies and Procedures:

Alcoholic beverages shall neither be served nor consumed at any official function or meeting of a Kiwanis district or club unless the district board of trustees or the governing authority of nondistricted clubs shall have given approval for the serving and consuming of such beverages at official functions or meetings.  Official function is defined as follows:  (1) one for which attendance is granted under the official attendance rules; (2) one which begins when the presiding officer calls the meeting to order and is concluded also by the presiding officer's order.  (10/83)

Our suggestion would be for you to discuss the matter with your club's Board of Directors.  Matters such as this are handled at the club level and can often be resolved at that level.
