Kiwanis International has learned that some clubs may not have filed its IRS Form 990 and is facing a May 17 deadline. Failure to file a Form 990 will result in immediate revocation of your club’s tax-exempt status by the IRS.

Filing the form is an easy process.
1.      Find your club’s status on the Urban Institute’s National Center for Charitable Statistics website.
2.      Click on your state.
3.      Put “Kiwanis” in the “Name” field; do not fill out the “Location” field.
4.      Select “All Organizations” in the “Organization Type” field.
5.      Check the “Limit to organizations in danger of revocation” box.
6.      Do not fill out the “NTEE purpose/activity code.”
7.      Click “Submit.”

Here are other things to keep in mind:

  • If you can’t find your club’s name, the IRS considers your club in good standing (see next bulleted item).
  • You can find a list of organizations that already have filed their returns by following steps 1 through 4 above and removing the “checkmark” from the box titled “Limit to organizations in danger of revocation?” The report will indicate what form has been filed for your club.
  • If your club is on the list but you recently filed the form, don’t worry: The IRS does not automatically update the list, so your club’s status may not be updated for up to one month. Check back in 2-4 weeks to see if your clubs is noted as having filed.
  • If your club is on the list and you have not recently filed the form, click the “File Now” link in the right column and follow the directions.
    • Most Kiwanis clubs should have a September 30 year end. When filing, please try to enter the year end as September 30, if applicable. If this is not possible, continue with December 31 as your year-end.
  • Remember to file this return annually after your club’s year end. You must remain current with this annual filing.

Kiwanis International does not have records of your club’s IRS history. The IRS website offers support, including answers to frequently asked questions. You can contact the IRS for assistance by e-mail or by phone at 866-255-0654 (the IRS reports that e-mail messages are preferred). For the Kiwanis International Office, e-mail finance@kiwanis.org or call 800-549-2647, ext. 153 or 146.

The process is easy and should only take a few minutes. Thank you for continuing to serve the children of the world through Kiwanis.
