Water and food: a vital connection

World Water Day is an international day of observance established by the United Nations to draw attention to the plight of more than 2.6 billion people worldwide who lack access to clean, safe drinking water. Celebrated on each March 22 since 1993, World Water Day encourages people to take small but meaningful actions to make a difference. This year’s theme, “Water and Food Security,” focuses on the relationship of water and food—how the scarcity of water leads to the lack of food security.

World Water Day works hand-in-hand with UNICEF’s Six Cents Initiative, Circle K International’s preferred charity, designed to help children get the rehydrating salts they need to survive dehydration spells.
