My Kiwanis Story

I am normally not one to start out anything like this by talking about myself, as that is not my thing. However, I think this story is a good way to kick off this blog...

In May of 2003 I was approached by the president of my wife Lynn's Kiwanis club in Keene, NH (I was not a member at that time) about creating a website for their club. I agreed to do it and we started to spec it out. After meeting with the newly formed web committee I began to see what challenges Kiwanis clubs face in administration and communication. So after specing out this site I determined it was way too much work to do for just one club and decided to start a company to create this application for all Kiwanis clubs. The company name is Club Resource, LLC and the product that is marketed to Kiwanis clubs is the KiwanisOne Club Management program.

Lynn was the secretary of the club at the time and as I was creating the site I could see all the work she had to do for the monthly report every month, so I figured there must be an easier way. So I created the online monthly reporting system and started shopping it around to districts. When I say "shopping" I mean giving them the reporting functionality for no cost as a way to help their district and the club secretaries. The first district that officially adopted it was Pennsylvania in October 2004. After they got on board nine others jumped on almost immediately. I was thrilled!

Once things were humming along I decided it was time to contact Kiwanis International. To be honest, I wasn't sure what I wanted to accomplish by contacting them, but I just knew it was time.   I forget how I decided this, but I chose to contact Jeff Oatess first. He turned out to the the best person I could have contacted, as he was very receptive to the idea, was appointed Interim Executive Director shortly thereafter, and was a swell guy. Working with Jeff we were able to get 24 districts using the online reporting system for the 2006-2007 Kiwanis year and standardized the report with the districts. A task some told me was not possible.

In March of 2007 Jeff talked to me and said that he would like me to go to lunch with him and Rob Parker. Hey, who am I to turn down a free lunch. So I pulled my truck to the front of the building and Jeff got in. As we were waiting for Rob, Jeff said "Oh, by the way, this is sort of like an interview". What!!! Honestly, I was expecting something like "Scott, you have done a great job with everything you have done for Kiwanis and we would like you to come on staff and continue to do what you were doing". Instead Rob proceeded to interview me for the position of Chief Technology Officer so I could oversee all technology for the organization.

So today I am the CTO of Kiwanis and absolutely love my job and love working with and helping Kiwanians. I still own Club Resource, LLC and have an arrangement with Kiwanis International so that the development and support of the club management program is done inhouse under my direction.

Having a Ph.D. in engineering I love to try and solve problems. I never could have imagined that creating this "simple" website for a local Kiwanis club would lead to 4.5 years of helping a huge international organization try and solve fundamental challenges through the use of technology.

Thanks for all of your great work Scott.  I know that Kiwanis leaders in our district  (including club secretaries) have really appreciated your persistence, patience and very dedicated assistance during the development and implementation of all the new technology you have brought to Kiwanis.  We have always found your work to be of the highest quality and reliability!

Hi Scott:

Welcome to Kiwanis.  I have a few suggestions that when you find time, I'd appreciate your addressing.  Thank you.

I find our present KI website makes it very difficult to find things.  Especially in researching past events over many years.  It seems every time some computer guru comes aboard they erase everything that took place five years back.  Therefore we have no continuity with our past.  (Our club has maintained scrapbooks from day one.  It would be like every time we elected a new president, they would throw away a scrapbook that's over five years old.)  Because of this practice, our KI membership has lost all touch with our past, good or bad.  It's like we're ashamed of some of some of the things we did and want to hide it.  Today we have terabytes at very little cost.  Can you help us rebuild our past?  For example:  Try to find a story about Kiwanis history on our site.  Here's all I can find:

Kiwanis History

o Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915.

o In the early years, Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking, but even then, members were serving the needs of the poor.

o By 1919, the organization had changed its focus from business to service.

o Kiwanis became an international organization in 1916 with the organization of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario.

o Kiwanis limited its membership to the United States and Canada until 1962 when worldwide expansion was approved.

o Until 1987, Kiwanis was a male-only organization. But after years of debate and growing support, women’s membership was received overwhelmingly.

Warm and fuzzy after 92 years of history???

Also:  I'm a member of the Kiwanis Club of the Virginia Beach-Combers here in the Capital District.  Our club of fifty members would like to build and maintain a little club web page.   (We're talking about two to four pages at the most.)  As we want to put all our money into our charities, we'd like to do it at no cost.  Can KI host web pages for all clubs, near and far?

Hi H.L.:

In January we will begin working an an interactive historical timeline of Kiwanis. It will be a detailed history and contain photos where available.  Conceptually it will be similar to the one here:

www.hp.com/.../timeline

Kiwanis Int'l does not host websites for clubs.  The company I started (Club Resource) does offer an easy to use website/club management program, but it is not free.  However, it is set up to allow a club to sell banner ads to sponsors to help pay for the service.  Some clubs even make money.

Hope this helps.

I began investigating the creation of a website for our local Kiwanis Club, Cincinnati Riverfront Kiwanis and stumbled across your story.  I am the Vice President of our club.  I have never created a website, but as more of members become computer/internet saavy I can see that there will come a time when we need such a useful tool.

Where do I start?  I understand that using Club Resource would probably be the "Cadillac" of websites for a club that is well up the learning curve on the web.  Our club is only beginning to embrace the electronic world.  With the hard work of one of our past presidents and with my assistance, we have our roster and club minutes available through emails.  Since I will be the President next year, I want my initiative for that year to be the establishment of a simple website with the above information available to the members.  I need help on how to proceed.

Thanks,

Chet Phelps

Hi Chet...Actually the web site program I created was geared towards beginners, yet flexible enough for the more experienced users.  We are overhauling the website management component right now to make it even easier, plus creating some online training videos to help users get up-to-speed quickly.
