A Truly Global Pursuit

This week I have had the privilege of participating in a global gathering of leaders exploring major issues facing the world in the area of global health, poverty alleviation, education and climate change.  Heads-of-state from 52 countries sat with leaders in business, philanthropy, government officials and non-governmental agencies to explore specific strategies and partnerships that could make a difference.  This non-partisan gathering of leaders included some very diverse opinions and approaches, but also some key areas of common interest.  Over the course of three days, million of dollars were committed by these leaders to help solve some very difficult problems.  I was reminded this week that Kiwanis International’s position as an influential member of the global family comes with great responsibility and opportunity.  Our next world-wide service project could leverage our reputation to attract the right corporate, foundation, government and philanthropic support to do something that would have a lasting impact on the world.   As we work towards discovering what that project might be, we are very interested in your input.  Of significant interest is ways we could maximize our impact by partnering with others.  Please share your thoughts on parnership opportunites that should  be considered.

1.  We already have a world wide service project for iodine. Now that the resolution passed in San Antonio to work with other international organizations on projects, Kiwanis might want take the lead to pool the international projects into one.

2.  Missionary and charity work is now becoming a booming industry with their own travel agents and destinations.  Hospital Ships, building homes, harvest help etc... are becoming the vacation choice for young professionals.  Young professionals, world-wide, are spending their vacations doing charity work:  The new "Reality" vacation.  This demographic would be a good pool to resource because of the clients they are already attracting.

A cross between the 21st century Love boat and the Peace corps, its a cruise with  intensive language and cultural training and applied charity work.  Excursions are charity-based rather than entertainment-based.  Cruise ship activities revolve around cultural-based themes.  Think:  Folklorio not disco.

3.  By joining up with other international organizations, there would be enough people to really make a difference and make it meaningful.  Because of the members that other international organizations already attract, they already "GET IT."  They are already like-minded individuals.  And wouldn't it be nice to  help prevent iodine deficiancy, polio, blindness and  to help women and children in one fell swoop?  Maybe the focus should be on the project that is completed rather than "who" does the project.
