Interesting Kiwanis Members?

Two weeks ago I had a chance to meet a 96 year old Kiwanis member.  This member joined the Kiwanis family over 70 years ago, and is still an active member.  Not only did he attend and participate in the meeting where I spoke, earlier that morning he had walked 3 miles and gone to the Y to "work-out".  Fred Birchmore was the first to circle the world on a bicycle (in the 1930's), and in 2002, at the age of 90, he climbed Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain in Georgia. He has lived an amazing life, and Kiwanis has been an important part of it.  Fred is truly an inspiration and another reason to be proud to be part of Kiwanis.  I would be interested in hearing about the unique, special or memorable Kiwanis members you have met.  Take a minute and share your story

Cliff Amos was a memorable Kiwanis member for me, and his dedication to attend International Conventions was a true inspiration.  Cliff and wife Faye attended over 25 KI conventions taking their children and grandchildren camping as part of the experience.  Cliff was so proud of visiting all 50 states and several foreign countries while making sure the family enjoyed the ideas of Kiwanis.  When I transferred into the St. Matthews Kiwanis (KY) Club in 1994, Cliff was always so positive that my membership would grow and prosper when I attended the KI Conventions.  He was 100% correct, and I continue to thank Cliff every year even though he passed in 2003.  He and Faye are buried in Lexington (KY), and when we have Kiwanis business at the KT District Office we stop to say "Thanks."

I met Fred Birchmore when I was in Athens, Georgia during the year I was Kiwanis District Governor (99-00).  He truly is remarkable.  Our Kiwanis Club, Historic Roswell (Georgia), has two special members who are both 93!  One turns 94 next month.  They have slowed down a bit, but still keep us active and busy -- they are a treasure to know.

When I asked Henry (94 next month) his secret for longevity, he says simply: "Keep breathing!"

Our club is fortunate enough to have 5 charter members that are still active in our club since it's inception date of October 27, 1947.  These gentlemen are always inspirational, supportive, encouraging, and a wonderful source of club history.

We cherish each day we have with them.  They help to keep our club strong!

I attended the meeting in Athens when you were introduced to Fred Birchmore.  Mr. B was one of my Scoutmasters at Troop 4 in Athens around 1963-68.  As you can imagine there was never a dull moment!  Our patrol had our meetings at his house when his son Danny was the patrol leader, and we were amazed at his vast collection of arrowheads.  I joined Kiwanis in 1980, and Mr. B was there again.  He has always been a leader in my life.
