Anything you want to know?

This week your Kiwanis International Board is in Indianapolis for a series of meetings.  If you were here with us this week, is there anything you would like to tell them, or ask them?  I would be pleased to share any comments or questions that you have directly to your International President who is also chairman of the board.

So...any comments or questions?

Is there any further direction on the KI-Boys and Girls Clubs partnership or are the clubs being counted on for leadership?  Kiwanis Club of Columbus is rolling out the latest phase of our partnership this week with Kiwanians tutoring and mentoring Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbus members at one of their local after school programs.  We have already donated books to enhance the club's reading program and have gained one new member from our local Boys and Girls Clubs administration.

Scott,

Great question. We have put together a ton of ideas and informaiton on www.kiwanisone.org  or you can link to it on the kiwanis.org site under "partnerships".  If you have other quesitons we have a staff member Elizabeth Warren who can assist.  She can be reached at ewarren@kiwanis.org

After voting at the International Convention all the sight vote

cards are thrown away. We should become more green and see if there is a organization or school that can use this paper.

This is a great idea.  We may even be able to do better than that this year as we are strongly considering an electronic voting option that would require no ballots.  Either way, I will forward your suggestion to our elections committee for their review on how to make our elections as green as possible.

Officers in Kiwanis at the International and the District level have to deal with children.

Are criminal checks done of all or any of the officers at the International and or the District level.

Have you considered what the media would do if they found a felon in our midst?

Mario,

Background checks are performed of any officer or volunteer who participate or attend any of our events or activities involving children or young people.  The check is designed to protect our children from predators and people who might cause them harm,  From time to time we do have background checks that surface issues that are totally unrelated to protecting children.  Those are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

To answer your question more directly, someone is not automatically excluded from leadership in Kiwanis for behavior that is unrelated to protection of children.  It is be possible for someone to have a unrelated felony conviction in their background and still be considered for certain leadership positions.  Those decisions are made on a case-by-case basis so that all relevant factors can be considered.

Rob,

Article V, Section 5  states

"Conduct unbecoming a member of the Kiwanis family is defined as  any conduct that:

..................

b. tends or threatens to harm the standing or reputation of the Kiwanis family in the local or global community."

How can a convicted felon, even if the issue is unrelated to children, not "harm the standing or reputation of the Kiwanis family in the local or global community?

Mario,

Now you are talking about something different, and I could not agree with you more.  Kiwanis should protect its reputation by only extending an invitation to those people that meet the character and integrity standards of Kiwanis.  If a club discovers that a member behaves in a way that is inconsistent with these ideals, it has the power to revoke that membership.  Kiwanians are members of clubs, and clubs are members of Kiwanis International.  Kiwanis International counts on local clubs to maintain these standards for their clubs,

As a membership organization our leaders are all elected by the members that they serve.  In the event that someone is elected who should not be serving, there is a process to remove someone from office and/or membership.

If the person is an International Officer, I would recommend a written communication to the International President outlining the concerns.

If the person is a District Officer, I would recommend a written communication to the District Governor outlining the concerns.

With all that said, there are many different opinions about how to handle a situation where someone has been convicted and has served their time.  Some will tell you that if a person has served their time as has been rehabilitated, they deserve an opportunity to join and serve.  Others will hold a much different view and not allow anyone who has been convicted of a crime participate as a member or serve as a leader.  I can't tell you what the right answer is, but I do think that each situation should be evaluated individually.

If you believe there is someone in leadership who should not be allowed to serve based on something in their past, you should formally notify the appropriate Kiwanis leaders at both the clubs level and at whatever additional level they are serving.

Feel free to contact me by e-mail at robparker@kiwanis.org if you have any further questions.

I know many of us have been wondering for a long time about the following:  What is the latest news about Kiwanis International getting approved for 501c (3) status?  It is pretty expensive ($1000 or more )for individual small clubs to submit and obtain the paperwork to become a 501c(3) organization.  Any advice?

Kevin,

Rob noted your comment about 501c3 status and asked that I respond.

We are still in the discovery portion of the application process but I believe we are coming to the end.  Rob and I went to the IRS regional office in Cinncinati last Fall and they informed us that after we respond to the latest round of request for information they will be done asking us questions and should very quickly render a decision one way or another.

Unfortunately, I don't think the outlook for reclassification is very positive as they recently denied Optimist International's request for tax reclassification.

I have just heard from our Governor Elect that the KI Board has decided that new training teams are to be appointed for this year's training in the ASPAC Region.  I also understand a joint training session is to be organised.  Is this so?

As the current Training Coordinator for the NZ-SP District I would like to know what decisions and/or arrangements have been made.  I feel the best time to have a joint training session would be at the ASPAC Convention in March.  How will selection of these future trainers be carried out?

Hi Alan!

Our plans for the training are still in development, and we have not asked anyone to form new teams.  Please send me an e-mail to chale@kiwanis.org and I will forward the latest communication that I sent out Friday, but please know that regarding the training, it is more of a preview of information yet to come.

Thanks!
