I was just talking the other day with my boss about how some moments, seemingly meaningless to the leader, can contain life-long lessons for the student.
Although, his Cub Scout leader would not remember him, let alone these moments, he vividly remembers one meeting where this gentleman taught him how to tie a necktie and another meeting where he first learned to pound a nail with a hammer; Skills that no one else taught him, and he uses to this day.
I remember my Cub Scout leader, Mrs. Lambert, and her calm and caring leadership style that stressed respect for my elders, and service above self. A science teacher, Mr. Waldman, who used student camping trips to break down the barriers of cliques that so often form in High School.
Everyday Kiwanis leaders are touching the lives of children, and other adults, teaching from experience and leading through example. You may never get a thank you (it usually takes some time for us to appreciate sacrifice, doesn’t it?), but never forget the seemingly insignificant example you set today, or leadership lesson you pass on tomorrow, may really mean something to someone through the rest of their life.
