One thing

One of my favorite movie scenes is from City Slickers. It's the story of three New York guys who are experiencing mid-life crisis.  They decide the best alternative for them is to head west to stay at a dude ranch and be part of a real cattle drive.  The scene in question is where Mitch Robbins (played by Billy Crystal) is riding next to Curly Washburn, the crusty old trail boss (played by Jack Palance).  Curly offers Mitch his view of the meaning of life.  Curly holds up his index finger and explains, "One thing.  Just one thing. You stick to that..."   Mitch questions, "But what is the one thing?"  Curly's answer is, "That's what you have to find out."

I've often thought that he could also have been talking about the meaning of Kiwanis.  For all of us, there is one thing that was the thing that made our club experience worthwhile.  It is most likely different for each of us, but there clearly is one thing.  People who have discovered that one thing are called active members.  On the other hand, people who never have found it usually end up being called former members.

The Kiwanis club experience is about helping every member find his/her one thing.  Mine was Key Club.  It brought me into the Kiwanis family.  It still holds my heart today.

What's your one thing?

As I think about my one thing, I would have to say it's the Six Objects of Kiwanis because they mean to me, "Let us all improve ourselves" by following the six objects, thereby making it a better world to live in.  Just think if every Kiwanian truly believed in and tried to follow these Six Objects, and then you get down to the camaraderie that most Kiwanians will agree is one of the things that made their club experience worthwhile, and maybe you can begin to realize how much better the entire experience really could be.
