How Many Other Lines Can We Find?

I was recently told a story about Starbucks coffee and their efforts to improve the quality of the coffee and lattes they produce every day.

As part of the plan, the corporate office forbade their employees from re-steaming milk, something that apparently had become commonplace.  As a result of this directive, the baristas were pouring millions of dollars worth of leftover milk down the drain.   As store managers began to think about ways to operate more efficiently they came across a very simple idea that made everyone think why it had not been thought of before – simply mark a line on the steaming pitchers so employees would know exactly how much milk to use for each size drink.  That epiphany became a rallying cry around the company, “How many other lines can we find?”

What can you do to improve the club experience for your fellow members?  Is there something obvious, which if initiated, would really give your meetings, pop?

How many other lines can you find?

In light of the recession, suggest a reduction in the cost of membership dues.

If club has members that have migrated, and we can't delete them, there should be provisions made, where clubs are only required to pay membership dues for the active members, & not those that have migrated, or may have decided to quit the club, due to other obligations (family, work or otherwise).

The money for membership dues, in this economy is not approriate, especially of newly starting clubs, and even some well establish KI clubs, that have some of it members suffer lay-off as companys cut staff, as a cost saving/ survival startegy.

There are KI clubs who financial resourses are weak, and funds for membership dues would limit such clubs ability to fund their own local projects in their respective communities. A waver or a reduction in the payment requirement for membership dues, should be considered in light of the recession.

The bouncing or deregistering of KI clubs, that are economically challenged, but have the willing hearts and minds, to render alturistic service, in this harsh economic environment will not assist.

Club secretaries come to my mind as people who frequently 'find a line' to step up to and utilize. There are so many new or constantly improving tools for them on KiwanisOne.org to help shake out more of those lines. I encourage them to talk with one another via forums and other commenting areas of the site to share what they discover!

The biggest problem I have found is the Club is OK for a lot of long term members and they don't want to make any change to accommodate younger-newer members -- and sometimes it may be the Clubs secretary that can be the most resistive

Membership dues are always a hot issue. Our organization is not cheap to run. Hats off to the team at KI for 2010-2011  dues restructure and deletion of New Member Add Fee.

Draw a new lower line by incouraging clubs to pay for their liability insurance from their SERVICE Account and not their Administration Account. $12/member for a club of 30+ is a savings of $360+ that the club membership doesn't have to cover from their individual pockets.
