As one of the presenters at this year's International Convention, Nashville, I wanted to thank both Kiwanis International as well as the attendees for such a wonderful experience. A special thank you goes out to Scott Smith for allowing me to guest blog about my Nashville experience.
My first impressions were, "what a great city/facility!" I really thought the convention team chose a great site. Since this was my first convention, I don't have anything to compare it to but I thought it was delightful and I'm told attendance was significantly up this year.
Arriving at my first presentation, nervous, my first attendees put me at ease right away and before I knew it, the room was overflowing and we were talking about frugal (free) marketing technology strategies that could be employed to promote their clubs. Additionally, everyone was very anxious to share their experiences about their individual markets and it ended up being a great conversation rather than a presentation.
To recap: we covered traditional media first but offered up some new ideas and existing resources regarding attracting the right coverage for your clubs and events. Then for the rest of the morning we focused on new media with an overview of options and then a robust Q&A. My only regret ... we didn't have enough time as I raced through the remaining slides!
My second presentation on Saturday was the Digital Divide and I must say, was tremendously affirming. Despite facing an audience of "digital immigrants," everyone in the room was anxious to discuss the divide as it pertained to their clubs, both the challenges as well as the opportunities. Again, not enough time.
Sidenote: People approached me in the hallways with incredible stories about their clubs and how technology is really become a central focus. Not only did they want to pick my brain (pick away, I love the topic) but they wanted to share ideas about leveraging technology not only to promote their clubs but to create service projects using technology (and bridging the divide) as a central theme for their projects! Too cool for words!
All of my presentations are available at KiwanisOne.org if anyone wants to access them. Thanks again, to everyone who sent me, welcomed me, and shared with me! I look forward to hearing about your journeys with technology!
