A Kiwanis International Resource Portal

What's new online: July 30

Part of Web site management is keeping the content fresh. A pet peeve for me is a stale home page. Your site's dashboard (home page) should be a daily stop for your audience to get the latest details and branch out to discover new resources. If your dashboard doesn't change very often, what's the incentive to return regularly, if ever?!

Luckily the www.KiwanisOne.org dashboard gets updated weekly and typically more often than that. Of course, we strive to update all the Kiwanis-family Web sites as often as possible, and have made some small updates recently.

Check out the new house ads (promotions of Kiwanis campaigns or initiatives as opposed to paid ads from external advertisers) posted on the Foundation dashboard for Robert P. Connelly Medal of Heroism and World Service Medal, the ad posted to Aktion Club dashboard for the upcoming Service Leadership Conference save the date reminder, the new UNICEF ad posted to Builders Club dashboard, and the new store ad on K1 dashboard to match recent e-mail newsletter showcasing the travel mug.

Also a reminder that we've posted more photos to the Kiwanis-family Photo Library. Browse at www.KiwanisOne.org/photos. Did I mention that these FREE image for club use feature real Kiwanians and local youth (not paid models)?! Clubs can use these images for promoting their service and fundraising efforts in promotional material and club Web site as much and as often as they'd like.

The Kiwanis New Club Building Kit Request Form was revised to clarify that this particular form is only for Kiwanis clubs and not SLPs. The shortcut URL created: www.KiwanisOne.org/newclubkit1.

On the subject of shortcut URLs, we also created www.KiwanisOne.org/clubbrochure (Club Marketing Brochure order form) and www.KiwanisOne.org/CLE (Club Leadership Education online module) to help users remember how to find key resources. Sure beats a 4-lines long URL full of symbols!

Until next time ...

I just looked at your 7/30 posting and would like to know more about what you mean by "site's dashboard."  I attended Cate Indiano's "Making the most of today'smedia to market Your Club, at the Nashville convention and found it to be the best forum I've ever attended in 22 years in Kiwanis.  But only now am I getting a little time to investigate some of the things she talked about.  One of them, I'm sure was the site's dashboard.

We refer to our Web sites' default home pages as the dashboard. On KiwanisOne.org, that is the Member Resources home page. Rather that just a static home landing page, the dashboard is the daily go-to for critical information for Kiwanis members and clubs. We strive to make the dashboard an important pitstop by organizing and presenting the most important news and resources (links to tools, etc.) in a way that is easy to read, skim, browse, and navigate. The information on the KiwanisOne dashboard changes weekly at a minimum for news and announcements, but you will always find the main resource links in the same spot, such as Grow & Build Clubs or Login. Let us know what you think of the dashboard and how we could improve it for you.

It takes a lot of work to keep a web siite full of dynamic information. We use php scripts to provide up to date information. This is especially useful when the webmaster goes on vacation. For example information about weekly programs is entered by the member(s) responsible for that program, then automatically displayed as upcoming, recent or an archive list of programs.

We also display upcoming interclub opportunities. This is somewhat problematic because it is hard to keep track of clubs who change location.  Is there a way to tap into the club locater information to insure that we publish accurate information?

Donald - While that could really benefit clubs and districts, it is not something that can be done at this, The only option now would be to periodically search the club locator and see if there have been any changes.

Why not include a link to contact the writers at Kiwanis Magazine?  The article on Panama in the recent issue deserves comment.
