JOIN KIWANIS OR DIE! Join Kiwanis or die. That does seem a bit harsh doesn’t it – hardly a membership slogan. However, that’s just the conversation that I was having with a member of our club recently and it made some sense to both of us. How many people do you know who retire, then die within two to three years? Research shows that a major factor in this is that the retiree no longer feels needed or useful. That’s why married people live longer, as do those with a pet. The mind can be very powerful. People with a hobby or a part time job live longer too. While I cannot find any experts who say that members of a service club live longer as well, it only seems reasonable. Kiwanis can provide a sense of purpose and usefulness. And it is even a family of sorts to some. Invite a recent retiree to join your club. You might just be saving a life.
